Numila Camp is disappearing as the sugar mills have left the Hawaiian Islands. This is a plantation cottage that hasn’t been occupied for years. Along with the cottages surrounding it, that the cane workers lived in, it is scheduled for demolition in the next few months to make room for a upscale housing development. I have painted almost every cottage in Numila Camp. I am trying to preserve the history of this island and its people. Many of these cottages shared outhouses when they were originally built. The workers were brought here from the Philippines, Japan, China and Portugal most without any family. The roads are still dirt and laundry is hung from porches. I recently visited with a 95 year old woman that was born and raised in her cottage but had just been evicted by the new landowner/developer.
