Step 2

This gestural and colorful painting encompasses my experience working through the second step of Alcoholics Anonymous. Step 2 reads as the following: "Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity." The dead leaves in the center of the bush represent the insanity and depression I experienced when I was not yet in recovery, while the bright colorful leaves surrounding them represent the joy, hope, and positive perspective I now have because of my higher power. I chose to create this painting in a gestural style in order to convey the emotion tied to my relationship with my higher power, as well as to portray the abstract nature of spirituality in general.
