Watercolor on smooth gesso panel. This is a subject I have painted many times plein air in different times of the year and in different types of weather. I based this studio painting on a very small study I painted plein air, late in the day, just after a rain squall had passed and the sun peaked out. I loved how the stone was highlighted. I had found a place to sit that gave me the upward view and I loved the drama of it. I knew I needed to paint a larger version. I was able to spray varnish the finished painting and frame it with no mat or glass. I love the way the paint on the gessoed surface created such wonderful drippy texture.
