Upper St. Joe River

The St. Joe River is one of north Idaho’s many gems. There is paved road a long ways up the river, which turns to gravel, and eventually ends at a campground and trailhead. The river beyond this point is classified Wild and Scenic and is accessible only by trail. The Joe takes on various personalities throughout its journey to Lake Coeur d’Alene; the drive up river is increasingly rugged and remote. This is one of my favorite areas to explore close to home.
