Sunday Salmon

My interest in the ‘Billingsgate’ story stems from a fascination with the Thameside fishing market; work generally considered menial by our society, yet carried out with a great deal of pride and passion by those small communities involved. These groups have often functioned as their own micro-cultures; by turfing them, longstanding heritage and identity disappears. The painting was built up from making lots of pencil sketches and oil colour studies in the market sporadically over the space of a year. The finished pieces was an amalgamation of all the prep work, this aided me in creating the large scale piece back in the studio. I was able to timelapse the painting from start to finish. I used oils and hog hair brushes to create the painting.
