At the end of Kamaili Road is an ancient place, the village of Opihikao, right on the coast, where the the opihi mullusks were plentiful beneath the cliffs. The jungle is still mighty there, full of spirits. The Red Road is too narrow for two modern cars to pass each other—one of you has to pull a little to the side. Now all that’s there along the coast is a church, and some overgrown lava-stones piled into low walls.
