Joan's Hydrangeas

My friend, Joan, has an amazing garden on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Her partially shaded yard is a haven to hydrangeas that thrive in the Southern climate - receiving morning sun ,but also - the all important afternoon shade - shielding the magnificent blooms from the powerful afternoon sun. Southern sun, during the month of June, can already scorch tender blossoms that aren't protected by natural shade from neighboring magnolia or pine trees. She was kind to let me come into her yard and paint the flowers at their peak. Here in South Carolina, summer comes fast - and, the beautiful hydrangeas blooms are fleeting.
